The concept and challenge for this renovation and addition was to create a drastically expanded kitchen with built in eating space for viewing for the garden, and reorganized entry to the basement, while housing a museum for an intense collection of art and craft objects from Asia, antique kitchen implements and natural findings like pebbles. The result is a new addition that helps balance the rear façade on the exterior, and provides a light airy space that carefully wraps around cabinetwork that frames each kitchen task as much as it does display each item of the collection. The interior butler stair was reconceived like a Japanese step chest, but here incorporates kitchen appliances such as the fridge, open shelves for display, and provides the service of being a stair guard rail.
