Howland Garden One

Entry View

This 23 x 82 ft (7 x 25m) Toronto rear garden was developed as a master plan to be executed in phases by the owners’ family of five. The design uses commonly available found and recycled materials, including waste generated by the project itself. A boardwalk lined with hydrangea vines links a dining patio and pond, lawn and vegetable garden, and woodland garden along its length. Wood and fibreglass screens unify the space and conceal the new stair, bicycle storage, basement apartment entry, fire escape and garden storage. The boardwalk is constructed from fencing offcuts, the patio from recycled brick/pavers from three other gardens, the fountain is lined with recycled crushed glass, and the woodland planter is made entirely from wood off-cuts generated during the construction of stairs and screens.
